As we embark on the next chapter at the Shelter Farm, the Port Alberni Shelter Society (PASS) would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Alex Taylor and his faithful companion, Bella. Over the past year, Alex has served as our dedicated farm manager, covering for Claire Boudreau during her maternity leave. His contributions have been nothing short of transformative, and his presence will be sorely missed.
Transforming the TRC Program & Expanding Operations
When Alex stepped in, our Therapeutic Recovery Community (TRC) program at the farm was in its infancy. Under his leadership, we’ve seen an incredible expansion to up to 60 hours each week of TRC participation on Shelter Farm. This growth has provided individuals with the opportunity to engage in meaningful and therapeutic activities, contributing significantly to their recovery and well-being.
Alex’s tenure has also been marked by significant operational expansion. We are thrilled to report that we’ve added four extra fields to our production area and constructed four additional poly-tunnels. These developments have not only increased our capacity but also diversified the range of produce we can offer.
Thanks to Alex’s initiative, we have successfully expanded our sales outreach. Our fresh, locally grown produce can now be found at Naesgaards, Springfords, and through the Parksville Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. This expansion has allowed us to reach more customers, providing them with healthy, sustainable food options while supporting PASS’s housing and recovery programs.
Under Alex’s guidance, we’ve tried new ways of farming that help us grow more food. We use fish compost and special fabric to make the soil better, which helps our plants grow stronger. These sustainable practices have set a new standard for our operations, ensuring that Shelter Farm remains a leader in eco-friendly agriculture.
A personal note from Alex
Reflecting on his time with PASS, Alex shared, “My favourite part about working for PASS and what I will miss most is working outside with a diverse group of people, doing something rewarding and challenging every day.”
Welcoming Back Claire Boudreau
As we bid farewell to Alex, we are delighted to welcome back Claire. Claire’s return marks the continuation of the incredible work she began before her maternity leave. We are excited to see her bring her expertise and passion back to the Shelter Farm, and to continue the momentum Alex has helped build. We look forward to seeing Claire lead the next phase of our journey!
To Alex and Bella: thank you for your hard work, your passion, and your unwavering dedication to the Shelter Farm and the TRC program. Your efforts have made a lasting difference in the lives of many. We wish you all the best in your future endeavours and know that you will always be a part of the PASS family.
We invite the community to join us in celebrating the incredible contributions of Alex and Bella and in welcoming Claire back. Your support is invaluable to us, and together, we will continue to build a brighter future for all.
Thank you once again, Alex and Bella, for everything. Here’s to new beginnings and continued success!
