It’s B.C. Seniors Week (June 2-8, 2024), and it is a time to recognize the contributions from seniors to our community, however, it’s also an opportunity to shed light on a growing issue – senior homelessness.
Fact: Older adults are the fastest-growing age group of those experiencing homelessness in Canada.
There are various factors contributing to the rise of senior homelessness, including:
· Lack of affordable housing options for seniors on fixed incomes
· Health issues and lack of support services
· Loss of a spouse or caregiver access
· Rising costs
Furthermore, the stigma surrounding seeking help for mental health, coupled with a lack of resources specifically tailored to address the unique needs of homeless seniors, can add to existing challenges.
You Can Help
The Port Alberni Shelter Society continues to help alleviate these pressures by providing vital support and resources to elderly individuals in our communities who have fallen on hard times. Through housing, advocacy, outreach, community partnerships – and your support – we can continue to make a meaningful impact in the lives of seniors facing housing insecurity.
