Located on 3rd near Bute St., the PASS teaching kitchen is a commercial kitchen where our clients and members of the public can learn new skills, gain experience, and in partnership with North Island College (NIC), complete courses related to Food Safe preparation, training and certification.
Our teaching kitchen features an instructor station and 6-8 individual stations where students can learn how to clean, process and prepare produce provided by Shelter Farm. Other food handling opportunities include proper storage, meal preparation and cooking techniques. The kitchen includes a dishwasher, commercial freezer and walk-in cooler.
NEW! We’re excited to announce the launch of Shelter Bakery, a brand-new training and learning venture at Shelter Farm, part of the Therapeutic Recovery Community (TRC) operated by the Port Alberni Shelter Society. This new bakery program gives residents hands-on experience in baking artisan bread and buns, while developing valuable life and employment skills in a supportive, therapeutic environment. Shelter Bakery is more than a delicious new initiative; it’s a chance for residents to grow, heal, and build a stronger future through meaningful work.
You can now find Shelter Bakery’s fresh bread and buns every week at the Spirit Square Farmers’ Market in Port Alberni. By picking up a loaf or a bag of buns, you’re not only getting something tasty, you’re supporting a recovery-focused program that fosters dignity, connection, and skill development. Come by, say hello, and taste the difference community makes.
The Spirit Square Market happens every Saturday at Harbour Quay from 9am until 12pm noon!
