The Fall CSA Weekly Veggie Share Subscription is an 8 week program September 9h – October 30th.
The Fall Subscription features fresh produce like: corn, carrots, beets, zucchini, patty pans, microgreens, squash, melons, pumpkin, garlic, kale, lettuce, salad mix, turnip, spinach, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, kohlrabi, collard greens, plums and apples.
The TRC program is proud to offer delicious fresh bread and buns as an optional addition to our CSA boxes.

About Shelter Farm
Shelter Farm is a Market Garden Social Enterprise operated by the Port Alberni Shelter Society. Located on a 172acre ALR zoned property within the Alberni Valley. We grow 70 varieties of Fruit, Vegetables and Herbs. We are home to the Alberni Valleys first Therapeutic Recovery Centre which immerses participants in the therapeutic benefits of farm life. As well, we host a Peer Employment Program through partnership with INEO Employment Services for people struggling with homelessness or at risk of homelessness.
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a system that connects the producer and consumer within a food system. The consumer purchases “Shares” of the harvest upfront before the beginning of the season. This upfront investment in the farm allows the farmer to access resources required to have a successful harvest. At Shelter Farm we have 3 seasons of CSA Shares. A Spring 8 week program, a Summer 14 week program and a Fall 8 week program. The shares will be fresh, in season, fruit, vegetables and herbs.

PASS would like to extend a BIG thank you to Mr. & Mrs. Casanave of Port Alberni for their recent donation of 25 warm winter coats for our shelter clients. One of the lucky recipients of the winter camp jackets included Gilbert. Gilbert is 56, born of Cree and Dene parents in northern Saskatchewan and was fostered in Prince Albert. Gilbert has experience working in flooring and concrete construction and has been sober for 7 years. He has 7 children, of whom he is in touch with four. Gilbert is currently a resident of emergency shelter.

Just 10 minutes from Port Alberni is 140 acres of land that grows more than just produce. It grows opportunities and hope. Shelter Farm is a social enterprise, a business operated by The Port Alberni Shelter Society.In addition to growing sustainable salad greens, root vegetables and fruits, Shelter Farm is home to the “market gardener training program”. This program is a partnership between the Port Alberni Shelter Society and North Island College. Instructor Guy Langlois has been working hard to attract and teach a new generation of farmers. In fact, his efforts have already garnered him a Green Business Excellence award from Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Centre!
More than a dozen youths (age 15 to 29) have enrolled in the eight-month course, and have already started their training.
The training program was established last year with a $94,600 grant from BC Rural Dividend, which assists rural communities of 25,000 or less. More funding from the Government of BC is expected. Future plans include the installation of a greenhouse, electrical service, well, produce washing station, packaging station and produce cooler. Successful students can expect to graduate this November.
Next spring, Shelter Farm hopes to start an incubator farm program and hire a full-time farm supervisor.
