Just 10 minutes from Port Alberni on 172 acres is Shelter Farm. Operated by The Port Alberni Shelter Society, Shelter Farm farm grows over 70 kinds fruits and vegetables! This produce helps to feed our clients and provides some income to support our housing and recovery programs.

In addition to growing food, Shelter Farm works with INEO Employment to deliver the Peer Employment Program and is home Port Alberni’s first Therapeutic Recovery Community (TRC), a supportive long-term recovery and housing program.

What do we grow?

With 9 greenhouses and a germination room, Shelter Farm is able to grow year-round! Some of our most popular fruits and vegetables include plums, apples, strawberries, raspberries, melon, beans, corn, asparagus, chives, rhubarb, zucchini, squash, leeks, beets, parsnips, brussel sprouts, bush beans, pole bears, snow peas, shelling peas, hot peppers, microgreens, salad mix, tomatoes, carrots, kale, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, onions, garlic and 3 types of cucumber. We also produce some lesser known vegetables including hakurei turnip (a Japanese variety that requires no cooking!), kohlrabi (part of the cabbage family – great for coleslaw!), nasturtiums (edible flowers), mizuna (Japanese mustard greens) and patty pans (a summer squash). Mmmmm!

Working with nature

At Shelter Farm, our farmers follow Jean-Martin Fortiers Market Garden principles. We do not use herbicides or pesticides. We rotate our crops to control pests, prevent disease, prevent soil erosion and enhance soil fertility. Our soil is also enriched with organic matter – compost – not chemicals. This helps to improve soil structure and provides essential nutrients for plant growth. Efficient irrigation systems, water conservation measures and rainwater harvesting are also used to minimize water use and to protect water quality.
