Description
NOTE: This is for the Port Alberni pick-up option only!
Our CSA program runs from the spring through the fall, and we offer three seasonal CSA subscriptions for these – but if you want to give it a try, we also occasionally offer a Weekly ‘one-time’ CSA box individually, rather than as a full subscription.
The Summer Subscription features fresh produce like: strawberries, zucchini, patty pans, lettuce, salad mix, peppers, eggplant, tomatoes, cucumbers, kale, cabbage, kohlrabi, broccoli, corn, turnips, potatoes, beets, carrots, brussel sprouts, chard, mustard greens, parsley, dill, chives, oregano, thyme and mint.
About Shelter Farm
Shelter Farm is a Market Garden Social Enterprise operated by the Port Alberni Shelter Society. Located on a 172acre ALR zoned property within the Alberni Valley. We grow 70 varieties of fruit, vegetables and herbs. We are home to the Alberni Valleys first Therapeutic Recovery Centre which immerses participants in the therapeutic benefits of farm life. As well, we host a Peer Employment Program through partnership with INEO Employment Services for people struggling with homelessness or at risk of homelessness.
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a system that connects the producer and consumer within a food system. The consumer purchases “Shares” of the harvest upfront before the beginning of the season. This upfront investment in the farm allows the farmer to access resources required to have a successful harvest. At Shelter Farm we have 3 seasons of CSA Shares. A Spring 8 week program, a Summer 14 week program and a Fall 8 week program. Each weekly share is valued at $22. The shares will be fresh, in season, fruit, vegetables and herbs.
Weekly Pick-Up Details
We have partnered with two local businesses to offer convenient pick-up locations, The Salty Woodsman and Double R Meats. We harvest Wednesday and Friday mornings and deliver the shares fresh to the pickup locations. Our pick-up times, from both locations, are Wednesday and Friday from 2 – 5:30pm. Shares will be delivered in an airtight Rubbermaid tote labeled with the customer’s name. Customers must bring their own reusable bags, and leave the totes at the pick-up location for re-use next week.
Please bring your own reusable bags.
Instructions: Pick up the box at the back of the property in the secondary building. You can park in the front on Hirst Ave and walk around the side of our main building -the blue house- to the back yard, or drive in the alleyway that runs behind their property, which runs between McCarter Street and Craig St. The alleyway will be the most direct way to access the boxes, especially for any who may have mobility challenges.
